Role of the Therapy Professions Advisor

The Therapy Professions Advisor works along with other members of the National Clinical Strategy & Programmes Directorate in the development of the clinical care programmes.

The role of the Therapy Professions Advisor is to support the work of the Directorate and ensure appropriate input from the therapy professions to support clinical pathways development, workforce planning and educational requirements to support service provision.

The lists of the professions involved are:

  • Chiropody/Podiatry
  • Clinical Nutrition/Dietetics
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Orthoptics
  • Physiotherapy
  • Speech and Language Therapy

The Therapy Professions Advisor works with the National Clinical Programme Leads and Programme Managers to implement the agreed process of sourcing therapy professionals to join the working group of the Clinical Programme.  The requirement is communicated to the Therapy Professions Committee.  The Committee seeks nominations from the professions involved and a person is appointed to the working group of the Clinical Programme in order to offer their expertise for the clinical pathways development.  This process ensures standards of care are developed to best practice both within the overall programme and the specific therapy professions.

The therapy professional nominated to the working group for a National Clinical Programme is not only representing their profession but all the professions listed above.  Therefore it is important that the nominated professional communicates and engages with other therapy professions to ensure all perspectives are considered for the work of the clinical pathway development for the programme.
