Overview of Posts & Benefits

Professional Development Posts are available in each of the four HSE Areas in a range of specialties, including Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Psychiatry.

Doctors employed in a Professional Development Post will hold a two-year contract.

During the two years, each doctor will:

  1. spend at least 6 months in a large regional hospital or a specialist paediatric or obstetric hospital;
  2. participate in a Professional Development Programme run by the relevant Irish postgraduate training body in the doctor's specialty and funded by the HSE;
  3. receive certification from the postgraduate training body when they complete the Professional Development Programme;
  4. be able to participate in clinical courses such as ACLS, IBU and PALS and be refunded up to €450 on successful completion;
  5. be refunded up to €450 on passing approved examinations;
  6. benefit from up to 18 days Educational Leave to support participation on approved courses, exams or professional development activities.

 

Doctors in Professional Development posts will be employed under the NCHD (Non-Consultant Hospital Doctor) Contract 2010 as Senior House Officers (SHOs) or Registrars - depending on the post.
