Changing how we deliver health care

The way we deliver health services is changing: medical technology and advances in medicine and research means that we have to ensure that we offer patients a health service that gives the best outcome and increased survival rates.  The best health services are designed around the needs of the people who use them; rather than on a geographic or historical basis. Read about the four ongoing transformation programmes by clicking the relevant button on the left.

On average only 1 in 10 people using health services need critical care/advanced life saving or specialist care.   The majority of patients require access to non –critical care that is best provided in local hospitals and community services All of these services can be provided by local hospitals and local community services supported by regional centres for specialised services (e.g. breast cancer), complex surgery (e.g. bowel surgery), critical care (life support) and emergency services.

We need to change the way we deliver health services; these changes are being led by consultants, nurses, managers and frontline staff.  Currently there are four projects underway and at various stages:

  • North East (Cavan, Louth, Meath, Monaghan)
  • Mid West (Clare, Limerick, North Tipperary)
  • South West (Cork, Kerry)
  • South East  (Carlow, Kilkenny, South Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford)
  • West (Galway, Mayo, Roscommon)
  • North West (Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim)

If you want more information on the current progress on these then please click on the options on the left, where you can access reports, news, protocols, policies and details of the staff involved in progressing these changes.

Mr. Brian Gilroy, National Director has overall national responsibility for delivering the transformation of services and integration strategy for the HSE. At a regional level the Regional Directors of Operations have responsibility: North East - Mr. Stephen Mulvany; Mid West - Mr. John Hennessy; Regional Director of Operations; South East and South West - Mr. Pat Healy
