Services

Monaghan Hospital site is part of the Cavan/Monaghan Hospital Group and provides a general acute hospital service to the catchment area of Monaghan. 

The range of acute services are as follows:

  • General Medicine
  • General Surgery   
  • Gynaecology (out-patient and day gynaecology)
  • High dependency/Special care     
  • Coronary Care Unit    
  • Day Services
  • Treatment Room ServicesOut-patient Services

The bed complement at 1/1/2003 is as follows:

51 General Medicine (including 3 CCU beds)
32 General Surgery (including 3 HDU beds)
13 Day Ward Beds

Hospital currently off-call.  

The “Treatment Room” for minor injuries operates on a 24-hour basis at present Services and is managed by the Department of Surgery. Medical emergencies are admitted directly to the wards.

Proposals

  • Elective Medical Services and an emergency medical service provided 24 hours a day 7 days a week on a protocol driven basis

  • A protocol-driven five-day elective surgery service.  Major elective and emergency surgical services for the Hospital Group will be provided at Cavan or at other hospitals as appropriate.  This proposal is in line with the recommendation of the Royal College of Surgeons considered and adopted by the Independent Review Group on Surgical, Orthopaedic Trauma and A&E services in June 2002

  • Day services including day surgery, gynaecology, general medicine, dermatology, rehabilitative medicine and diagnostic services

  • A Treatment Room on a seven-day, 9am to 9pm basis under the management of the Dept of Surgery

  • Outpatient services in medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, ENT, dermatology, urology etc will continue or be developed as appropriate on the Monaghan site

  • Dermatology Services for Cavan/Monaghan

  • A Midwifery led Maternity Unit will be provided in accordance with the recommendations of the Review Group on Maternity Services and the work of the task force set up to implement its recommendations

  • Appropriate diagnostic and support services will be provided.
