| New Disability Services
Unit in Virginia, Co. Cavan
The new Disability Services Unit in Virginia was opened on Monday
12th July 2004. This Unit will cater for the needs of 10-12 service-users
with a moderate to severe intellectual disability from the local
catchment area.
Up to now Day Activation Services have been provided centrally
in Rathcorrick in Cavan Town. This new development in Virginia is
the beginning of a process of providing locally based day services
for people with a learning disability in Co. Cavan. As service-users
are from the surrounding area, it results in less time being spent
traveling to and from their Day Service in addition Client numbers
are smaller, therefore the staff to client ratio enables more attention
to be given to their individual needs.
A varied Day Care Programme is delivered in Virginia Health Care
Centre for individuals with an intellectual disability including:
- Computer Skills Training
- Cookery
- Independent Living
- Arts & Crafts
- Music Therapy
- Music & Movement
- Swimming
- 10 pin bowling
- Personal Hygiene Programmes
- Numeracy & Literacy
- Contract Cleaning
Service-users are encouraged to reach the best of their ability
in a safe, non-judgemental environment. Virginia day service also
fosters an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect.
