| Dietetics and Nutritional
Services
The service aims to improve the nutritional status of individuals
and groups of people in line with the National Healthy Eating guidelines
and to provide a high quality service to those requiring nutritional
assessment, advice and therapy.
Dietetic/nutrition services in the North Eastern Health Board are
based in Acute Hospitals and in the Community/Health Promotion services.
Dieticians/nutritionists have an extensive scientific background
and apply knowledge of food, nutrition and other related disciplines
such as biochemistry, social sciences and health promotion to prevent
disease and in the management of illness and promotion of well-being.
Nutritionists/Dieticians have overall responsibility for nutritional
management of patients in their care. Patient management involves
some or all of the following:
- Nutritional and Dietetic Assessment
- Therapeutic Dietetic Management, i.e. advice monitoring and
follow-up
- Provision of Nutrition Support.
Nutritionists/Dieticians also provide training in nutrition to
other healthcare professionals and work within the overall health
promotion policy of the Health Board.
