In order to maintain profit margins, the tobacco industry must recruit 5,000 new smokers in Europe each day - and at least 25 of these will be from Ireland. Every day children and teenagers who begin to smoke replace those adults who either die from smoking or who have quit. Here are some examples of how the tobacco industry to recruit children and young people.

"A cigarette for a beginner is a symbolic act. I am no longer my mothers child, I am tough, I am an adventurer, I am not square…. As the force from the psychological symbolism subsides, the pharmacological effect takes over to sustain the habit"
Philip Morris 1969

"It is a well known fact that teenagers like sweet products, honey might be considered"

Brown & Williamson 1972

"To ensure increased and long term growth for camel filter, the brand must increase it's share penetration among the 14 to 24 age group, which have a new set of more liberal values and which represent tomorrows cigarette business."
R.J. Reynolds 1975

TV and films
Cigarettes are "overused prop that sometimes substitute for good acting!" TV Congratulations to Hollyoaks and Brookie for being Smoke Free!

Ever wondered why certain brands of cigarettes appear in films and why only the leading actor is smoking them? Here are some hints: Sylvester Stallone made an agreement with a cigarette company to smoke their brand in 5 movies in 1984 for which he received over $500,000.00 Since 1989 the tobacco industry is not supposed to make deals like this, yeah right, see if you believe this next time you go to the flicks!!!

Environment
Modern cigarette-making machines use 4 miles of paper an hour! A far greater cause of deforestation is because wood fires are used to cure or dry tobacco leaves. In countries where coal, gas or oil are not readily available, wood is the main fuel used. A massive 2,000sq kilometers (1250 sq. miles) of forest are cut down for the cigarette industry alone!

Appearance
After cleansing, exfoliating, toning and moisturizing, how about a bit of poisoning? Well that's the reality. At this stage you know that cigarettes contain over 4,000 toxins, many of which your blood stream carries right into the structure of your skin. Unfortunately, skin care products only tackle the exterior surface.

Going smoke-free is the only way to protect the skin.
